All ICC condensing units, evaporators, and packaged systems are designed for the four most-specified refrigerants in North American commercial refrigeration: R448A, R449A, R404A, and R452A. Packaged (monoblock) units ship pre-charged with R448A. Angular evaporators also support R134A. All four are A1 (non-flammable) refrigerants compliant with current Canadian and US regulations.
Indoor split units have the condensing unit inside the building, connected to the evaporator by copper refrigerant lines — protects the equipment but adds heat load to the indoor space. Outdoor split units mount the condensing unit outside (roof, pad, or wall), removing heat from the building entirely — ICC outdoor units include a fan cycling switch for cold-weather operation. Packaged (monoblock) units combine the entire refrigeration system in one self-contained assembly mounted on the walk-in, pre-charged with refrigerant — the simplest install with no field refrigerant work.
Required capacity depends on the walk-in's interior volume, insulation R-value, ambient conditions, door-opening frequency, and product heat load (warm product entering the box requires more BTU). ICC Energy offers a free Load Calculator to help you size the right model. Cooler condensing units range from 3,500 to 37,000 BTU; freezer units from 4,700 to 36,000 BTU. Evaporators range from 0.33 HP (angular) up to 9 HP (large freezer applications).
